CLUB HISTORY

The club was established in 1926.

The Chow Chow Club of Wales applied to The Kennel Club for registration of title in November 1926. The Club was the 3rd Chow Chow Club to be established in the UK. At the time of registration the 1st secretary was Mrs H A Gerhold from Penarth S.Wales. In 1926 the Fee for registration was one Guinea (21 shillings) and the annual maintenance fee was 5 shillings. The clubs annual membership subscription was single seven shillings and six pence, joint 12 shillings. Although the club is the breed's national club of Wales the base has traditionally been in South Wales. The Club's records show that as far back as 1929 the Club was awarding trophies in the Cardiff Championship show - Lady Faudel Phillips judging Chows. In the 1930's, in addition to holding matches, the club was supporting shows organised by 8 other General Dog clubs to promote the breed within the Principality. A number of Trophies awarded in the 1920's and 1930's are still on the club's list of Trophies currently awarded. From the 1930's to the 1960's the club grew in strength organising its own shows whilst continuing it support of the breed in Wales by supporting chow classes at an increased number of all breed shows.

In 1975 The Kennel Club Granted Championship show status to the Chow Chow Club Of Wales.

The first Championship Show was held in Sophia Gardens, Pavilion Cardiff on 21st September 1975. Judge: Dogs - Mrs J Martin (Nitram) Bitches: Mr W Thomas (Shergay) Referee was Mr George Webster. Best in Show was Mr R Oldhams - CH Towmena Cherilee, Reserve Best in Show was Mr & Mrs R Wine's Ch Weircroft Sir Christopher, Best Puppy was Mrs A Westlake's Baytor Chinese Dynasty.

Since 1975 the Club has held, in addition to the two Annual main events - Open Show in April and Championship in October, Chow Rallies, Fun Days, matches and Seminars.

Currently, our show in April alternates location with the West Of England Chow Chow Club. This new and innovative concept enables both clubs to hold an open show on the same day (CCCW and WoECCC one show each). Our Championship show takes place in October and is held in Monmouth.

Every 9 years we (CCCW) host the Chow of the Year show, this replaces our championship show as our big show of the year.

The club has for many years been a participating member of the Chow Chow Breed Council.

Further information is available from our secretary Beryl Phillips.
